It's Breast Cancer Awareness Month. For those of us who've had breast cancer, it brings about mixed emotions. I find myself reflecting on the journey I've been through as a breast cancer survivor. The month of October and the color pink have always been a reminder of the importance of early detection, support, and advocacy for breast cancer. But for those of us who have battled this disease, our journey extends far beyond one month a year.
My breast cancer journey began 5 1/2 years ago with a finding a lump in my left breast. The day I received my breast cancer diagnosis, my world plunged into a realm of doctors' appointments, treatment options, and a future of uncertainty. I wrote about my treatment on a separate blog which you can find HERE. Please check it out and share it with anyone you think might benefit from it. The blog was a place that I could share my stories, experiences, and advice- it became a source of comfort and inspiration. If I was able to help just one person, it was worth the effort I put into it. Plus it gave me a journal to reflect upon years later.
The journey of any type of cancer is physically and emotionally grueling. Surgery, chemotherapy, radiation therapy, and countless doctor visits became a huge part of my life. The side effects were sometimes harsh, and there were moments when I wondered if I could handle it all. What kept me going was the support I received from my family and friends, as well as the strength within.
One of the most crucial lessons I learned from my breast cancer journey is the importance of early detection. Regular mammograms and self-exams can make all the difference in catching this disease in its early stages when treatment options are more effective. I now make it a mission to remind my friends and family to prioritize their breast health and get their annual boob-squish done.

I am proud to say that I am a breast cancer survivor. While the scars, both physical and emotional, remain, I have also emerged with a newfound appreciation for life. Life after breast cancer is not just about surviving; it's about THRIVING. It's about setting new goals, pursuing dreams, and finding joy in the little things. Every day is a gift, and we should all make the most of it.
Breast Cancer Awareness Month may be halfway over, but for those of us who have faced this disease, the awareness and advocacy continue year-round. My hope is that by sharing my journey as a breast cancer survivor, I can inspire others to take charge of their breast health, offer support to those currently battling this disease, and remind everyone that there is life after breast cancer.
I chose this photo of the Eiffel Tower which was lit up all in pink on October 1 in honor of Breast Cancer Month. I wish I could've seen it. I am proud of myself for what I've overcome the past 5 1/2 years. Get your mammograms ladies and make yourself proud!
