052- Drivers, start your engines

Fun fact about me- I love NASCAR! Does that surprise you? I think it was about 2001 was the first time I saw a race on TV. The 2024 NASCAR season started this past weekend with the Daytona 500, which many say is the Superbowl of auto racing. I've actually never been to a race in person so it is on my bucket list. Wondering why I like NASCAR? Who else is a NASCAR fan?

Not surprisingly, my interest in NASCAR has nothing to do with my knowledge of cars. My idea of knowing how to repair a car is calling roadside assistance to come help me out. In fact, my fascination with the sport stems from something different.

The sheer intensity and unpredictability of NASCAR is unmatchable in any other sport. I love watching the cars go so fast that's it's unfathomable. 150-200 mph?! I've never even driven over 100 mph. At some of the race tracks around the country, you can actually ride in a real race car. Another bucket list item! Someday. I know the Vegas track offers this and I have yet to convince my hubby to go check it out.

There is a lot of entertaining drama, both on and off the track. From the unexpected crashes that take out a whole section of race cars to the photo finish endings to the rivalries between drivers- it all adds to the excitement. One thing that actually impresses me is how well most of the drivers come across on camera. I'm sure they get all kinds of media training, but most are very well spoken. I love listening to the drivers explain what happened during the race.

Much of the appeal of NASCAR, in my opinion, is its culture. Most NASCAR fans have a favorite driver. My all time favorite driver is Dale Earnhardt Jr. He hasn't driven for a few years and I haven't "claimed" a new driver since then. Fans may find inspiration in a driver's journey, from underdog stories to tales of resilience. The human element adds depth to the sport, making it more relatable and emotionally engaging. NASCAR has a culture that goes beyond the cars themselves. The sense of community among fans and the dedicated support for favorite drivers create an atmosphere that sets itself apart from the typical sports experience.

While I may not be able to dissect the inner workings of an engine, I certainly appreciate the personalities and events that make NASCAR memorable. From the veteran drivers with a storied history to the rising stars eager to make their mark, each competitor brings their own flair to the track. The post-race interviews, the unique driver quirks, and the genuine passion for the sport all contribute to the story that keeps me coming back for more.

When we went to Indianapolis in November, we went to the Indianapolis Speedway where the Indy 500 and at least one NASCAR race per year are held. When you are walking around the track, it is just SO HUGE. We even "kissed the bricks."

In the world of NASCAR, my love for the sport goes beyond the technical aspects of cars. It's about the shared excitement, the sense of community, and the heart-stopping moments that make each race an unforgettable experience. So, even if my knowledge of cars is limited, my enthusiasm for isn't. Girls love NASCAR for the same reasons guys do – the thrill, the fashion, the community, and the undeniable charisma of the drivers. Don't be afraid to cheer for something you love! Make yourself proud.
