Burnout is a common problem that can affect anyone, regardless of their profession or lifestyle. It is characterized by a feeling of exhaustion, detachment, and a sense of reduced accomplishment, which can negatively impact one's physical and mental health. I really struggle with this, especially because my business can have a lot of negativity on a daily basis. I've tried a lot of different things and there are some that have helped me.

Here are five ways to help prevent burnout and maintain your overall well-being.

  1. Prioritize self-care and take time to recharge: Self-care should be a top priority when it comes to preventing burnout. This means taking care of your physical and mental health by eating well, getting enough sleep, and engaging in activities that make you happy and fulfilled. I have noticed that when I am not sleeping well, especially, burn out creeps in on me. Taking breaks and disconnecting from work can help you recharge and prevent burnout. It's essential to find activities that help you relax and de-stress. Sometimes just taking a quick walk from my office to the post office helps me, especially if the sun is shining. Fresh air can work wonders. Other things that help me are buying fresh flowers and having a cup of my favorite coffee.

  2. Listen to your body: Mindfulness is a powerful tool for preventing burnout. It involves being present in the moment, paying attention to your thoughts and feelings without judgment. This can help you manage stress and anxiety, and reduce the risk of burnout. If you truly listen to your body, it will tell you when you need to take a break. Maybe even take a mental health day, if you need it.

  3. Check in with yourself.... are you honoring your work-life balance (is there such thing?!) That's another topic for a different day. Try to leave work at work, and don't take it home with you. I know, especially if you are a manager, that this can be difficult. Have you heard the "Worry Tree Story?" I love this story!

  4. Protect your energy from "energy vampires." We all know what type of people that I'm talking about. Dealing with certain people in our daily lives can literally suck the life right out of us. It's okay to have boundaries, and let someone know that you will get back to that person to answer their question, deal with their problem, etc.

  5. Seek Support: If you're feeling overwhelmed, don't hesitate to seek support. Whether it's talking to a friend, a family member, or a professional, reaching out for help can be an effective way to manage stress and prevent burnout.

Preventing burnout requires a proactive approach to self-care and mental health. By setting realistic goals, taking breaks, prioritizing self-care, practicing mindfulness, and seeking support, you can maintain your overall well-being and prevent burnout from taking over your life. One day at a time as they say.

Even though this is one of my biggest struggles, this is also what led me to starting this blog. It gives me joy and a sense of calm to work on it. I'm proud of myself for choosing something that makes me happy. I challenge you to do the same-- make yourself proud!
