Sigma Alpha Sorority kept me at Cal Poly, SLO when I wanted to move back home for a guy. {Insert eyeroll}. No it wasn't my husband. You know what they say about Unanswered Prayers (cue up Garth Brooks' song). Anyway, back to Sigma Alpha. I joined the sorority at Cal Poly, SLO in the spring of my second year (1995). Sigma Alpha is a professional agricultural sorority that was founded at Cal Poly in 1990 so it was fairly new at that time.

Just a little history... Sigma Alpha was founded in 1978, at the Ohio State University. The founding members at Cal Poly recognized the need for a sorority that would promote women in agriculture, provide professional development opportunities, and foster a sense of sisterhood among women with similar interests. Sigma Alpha as a whole focuses on four pillars: professional development, scholarship, leadership,

and fellowship. The sorority aims to provide members with opportunities for personal and professional growth, academic excellence, and leadership development. Additionally, sisterhood and a sense of community play a significant role in the sorority's activities and events.

The first year or so at Cal Poly, SLO was kind of tough for me. I was homesick and really didn't find "my people" at first. Since I was an ag business major, joining Sigma Alpha seemed like a good fit. I am so glad I took that leap and connected with women who understood what it was like to come from an ag related background. I had never really had that connection during my growing up or high school years.

It's been 26 years since I graduated from Cal Poly, SLO and I am still in contact with many of the women that I met in Sigma Alpha.

Last month, the chapter held it's annual alumni brunch. I'd never had the opportunity to attend, but I wanted to go this year. While I was the oldest alumni there (by a LOT), it was still good to go and hear about what the chapter has been up to. They will be starting an alumni chapter soon so that will be fun to meet up with some of the ladies who were at Cal Poly when I was. I will forever be thankful for the group of ladies who were "my people" at Cal Poly, SLO. I will probably have the opportunity to be an alumni guest speaker at one of the chapter's meeting later this year and I am very much looking forward to that. What will I talk about? Of course it will be about Making Yourself Proud!
