I really try to be as real as possible here because, well, that's just how I am. Full disclosure- I've really been struggling with body image for awhile now. I don't know why I feel a little embarrassed to admit that. I've thought a lot about my weight and body image ups and downs throughout my life. I never really struggled with these things until my freshman year at Cal Poly, SLO. I wish it had only been the "freshman 15"... I think it was more like 25. That was a tough year for me and I struggled with a lot of things. But why is that number on the scale a determining factor about whether we like how we look or feel about our bodies?

After my cancer treatment, including instant surgical menopause, and the medications that I am on, my body has changed. I'm struggling to accept it. I thought that writing about it here may help me, and hopefully help anyone else that's struggling with the same things. I'm embarrassed that I've gained weight and I know that I shouldn't be. Bodies change as we age and go through different things in life. I try to tell myself that the most important thing is that I am here on this Earth and my weight or jeans size does not determine my worth. Why is it hard for us to believe ourselves?

I had two different ladies who work in the personal coaching field recommend a particular book to me. (Shout-out to two of my friends, Ashlyn with Food Freedom Discovery, and Coach Kiah). I downloaded it awhile ago and have tried to get into reading it several times. It's been a challenge. I really wanted to see what the book was all about so I signed up for Audible. Game changer! I've been listening to a chapter at a time and it's really making me think hard about things. I have also recommended this book to several other people lately.

The book "More Than a Body", by Lindsay and Lexie Kite, encourages readers to embrace self-love and body positivity. Why is it so hard to accept our bodies as they are now? There's so much that I could write about this book but that might take awhile. I am going to summarize in my top 10 takeaways from the book "More Than a Body."

  1. Embrace self-love: Recognize that your worth goes beyond your physical appearance and cultivate a deep sense of self-love and acceptance.

  2. Challenge beauty standards: Question the societal ideals of beauty that have been imposed on us and understand that true beauty comes in all shapes, sizes, and forms.

  3. Shift the focus to functionality: Instead of fixating on how your body looks, appreciate its incredible capabilities and focus on what it can do rather than how it appears.

  4. Reject body shame: Break free from the cycle of body shame by recognizing that your body is unique and valuable, regardless of how it compares to societal standards.

  5. Cultivate authenticity: Embrace your individuality and celebrate your unique qualities, recognizing that your worth lies in being your authentic self.

  6. Critically analyze media messages: Understand the powerful influence of media and culture in shaping our perceptions of beauty, and develop the ability to question and challenge unrealistic images and narratives.

  7. Practice self-compassion: Be kind and compassionate to yourself, treating your body with love and respect, and celebrating it as a vessel that allows you to experience life.

  8. Engage in activism: Become a body image activist by advocating for inclusivity, diversity, and body acceptance within your community and beyond.

  9. Surround yourself with positive influences: Surround yourself with people and resources that promote body positivity and support your journey toward self-acceptance.

  10. Focus on holistic well-being: Remember that your overall well-being is not solely determined by your physical appearance. Prioritize your mental, emotional, and spiritual health, and engage in activities that bring you joy and fulfillment.

If we all can implement these things in our lives, we can work towards embracing your body, cultivating self-love, and promoting body positivity in the world around you. It's not a switch we can just turn on... it takes work, practice, and patience. I really struggle with the patience part. Why can't I just make the decision and have it happen ***rightnow***? I totally understand that our past way of thinking is such a hard thing to change. I totally get it and am right there with you.

I have three challenges for you:
